10/14/17 - SOLD OUT Century of Progress Homes Tour

Cypress-Log-Cabin-interiorTICKETS HAVE SOLD OUT FOR THE 2017 TOURS

Join a National Park Service ranger at the Indiana Dune Visitors Center for a tour of five historic homes from the 1933 Chicago World's Fair on Saturday, October 14, 2017. These tours are available by reservation only and spaces sell out fast. Each tour lasts two hours and includes an inside look at the Cypress Log Cabin, Florida Tropical, Armco Ferro, House of Tomrrow, and Wieboldt-Rostone houses.

The houses were moved to Northwest Indiana in 1935 to promote the new town of Beverly Shores and were added to the national lakeshore in the early 1970's. Today, the historic homes are undergoing rehabilitation through a partnership with Indiana Landmarks and private citizens.

10/6-10/8/17: Outdoor Adventure Festival

Outdoor-Adventure-Festival The inaugural festival will take place at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and several nearby locations. The greater dunes region is packed with outdoor adventure opportunities and the festival will bring together all these activities in one place.

Centered at the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center, the festival will showcase the region’s natural and cultural significance through hiking, paddling, biking, and other activities such as geo-caching, photography, birding, and orienteering. The festival has events for everyone including families, beginners, experts, and those with limited mobility. The only requirements are the desire for an outdoor adventure and to have a great time!

Outdoor adventures extend well beyond the national lakeshore. The festival will take place across the region with activities in Porter, La Porte, and Lake Counties. A highlight of the weekend will be the grand opening of the Little Calumet River Water Trail with a tour sponsored by the Northwest Indiana Paddling Association, Shirley Heinz Land Trust, and Save the Dunes.

Another unique opportunity will be backpacking in the national lakeshore. With support from REI, the national lakeshore will be leading an overnight backpacking trip to Cowles Bog beach and back. Enjoy the sunset from your tent pitched on the beach along Lake Michigan! No experience required and equipment will be available to rent.

Although the festival is free, several events have limited spaces, so pre-registration is requested. Please sign-up for individual events by visiting or our website at and clicking on the Outdoor Adventure Festival icon.
