Saturdays - Beginning Birding

Beginning Birding Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Join a ranger and fellow birding enthusiasts from 9:00 am to 10:30 am at the Great Marsh Trail for a morning of birding. No experience required. A spotting scope and binoculars will be provided. The program will start at the southern gravel parking lot followed by a short hike to the Great Marsh observation deck to look for herons, egrets, ducks, and other birds of the marsh. If you arrive late, simply hike to the observation deck to join the event.

The Great Marsh Trail south parking lot is located on Broadway Avenue, about one-quarter mile north of U.S. Highway 12, in Beverly Shores. For more information on this or other programs at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, call 219-395-1882.

Sundays - Bailly Cemetery Hike

Bailly Cemetery Indiana DunesJoin a ranger-led hike to the historic Bailly Cemetery while learning about the history of the Bailly family. You can also learn about early settlers and farmers who came to this region in the 1800s as well.

Meet in the Bailly/Chellberg parking lot to enjoy a this fun hike every Sunday at 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm. Then you'll have the option to explore the interiors of both historic homes from 1:30 pm – 4:00 pm. The hike is not mandatory. You can meet the hikers at the Homesteads if you prefer. We recommend contacting the Visitor Center at 219-395-1882 for more information.

The Chellberg/Bailly parking lot is on Mineral Springs Road between U.S. 20 and Highway 12 in Porter, Indiana. Sundays - Bailly Homestead & Chellberg Farm Open House

Bailly Chellberg Open House Indiana DunesBetween 1:30 - 4:00 p.m., tour the interiors of the historic Chellberg Farmhouse and Bailly Homestead where you can learn about the lives of early Duneland farm families. Park in the Chellberg/Bailly parking lot and walk to the Chellberg Farmhouse.

Sundays - Miller Woods Hike

Miller Woods Trail Ranger at Douglas Center Join a park ranger for a hike through the beautiful oak savanna of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore's Miller Woods each Sunday afternoon at 1:30 pm. Hikes will vary in length depending on the interest and abilities of visitors. Meet at the Paul H Douglas Center for Environmental Education. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water and insect repellent.

The Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education is located in the western portion of the national lakeshore at 100 North Lake Street, about one mile north of U.S. Highway 12.

Every Saturday - Douglas Center Open House

Douglas Center Enjoy fun, family-friendly activities at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s Paul H. Douglas Center every Saturday from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm. Then, take the kids outside to the center’s Nature Play Zone where unstructured play in nature is encouraged. You can also help feed the center’s resident turtles and fish or join a ranger for a hike in the beautiful Miller Woods.
